African Americans expressed middle class American values through car ownership and cars helped to alter the way that people behaved toward one and to change deeply entrenched racial etiquette. Along the highways there was a close relationship between race and the organization of space. As black families and business travelers went out on the road, from the 1930s to the 1960s, they discovered a landscape of public establishments where they were unwelcome or even treated with hostility.;To help navigate the hostile roadside environment a variety of guidebooks assisted African Americans as they traveled in a country still in the throes of segregation. These travel guides provided state-by-state listings of public accommodations—hotels and motels, tourist houses, colored YMCAs, restaurants, movie theaters, doctors, barbershops and beauty parlors and various places of entertainment—that welcomed black patronage. The longest lasting and most successful of the African American travel guides was the Negro Motorist’s Green Book, published by Victor and Alma Green in their offices in Harlem. During the years of World War II the SLNCR was able to make a profit with fuel restrictions curtailing road transport. The ending of the war saw the resumption of road competition and the worsening of the company’s financial situation which was eventually to lead to its demise. Following the end of WW2 many railways suffered a motive power crisis and to offset their problems the SLNCR looked around for suitable locomotives to take on loan but nothing suitable was available from either the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) or Córas Iompair Éireann. Manchester locomotive builders Beyer, Peacock and Company were approached with an order for a single 0-6-4T locomotive and despite the company’s worsening financial situation a second locomotive was ordered the following year. Although these two locomotives were ready for delivery in Spring 1949 they were not delivered until 1951, being the subject of a hire – purchase agreement. They became, along with the ‘Turf Burner’ built by CIÉ, the last new steam locomotives to enter service with an Irish railway company. At this time an unlined black livery was used by the company. Brasswork was also painted black, however the borders and lettering of the locomotive nameplates were picked out in red. The lodge to the hall is also listed Grade II. It is dated 1873, is a timber framed building on a brick plinth and was designed by John Douglas. It has one storey and is in Jacobethan style.
