Would ball bearing oil or gun oil work well for oiling the shifter or brake cables on a bicycle?
What about 3-in-1 oil?
In my opinion WD-40, 3in1, ball bearing grease, gun oil, etc. are not good lubricants for anything that is exposed to dirt or dust on a consistent basis (such as outdoor cycling) as it attracts and holds sediment, which can cause cable and housing deterioration and, after time, actually exacerbate stickiness and drag in the system. I recommend using a dry silicone lube for cables. Quality chain lube also works well.
